As a part of the REIL-Biology project, we conducted a national survey of faculty who teach introductory biology laboratory courses to determine:

1. The essential components of an authentic research experience in introductory biology laboratory courses
2. The demographics of introductory biology laboratory courses at their institution and the degree to which they incorporate authentic research experiences
3. Perceptions of barriers to the implementation of authentic research experiences in introductory biology laboratory courses.

The survey was developed by the steering committee of the REIL-Biology project and disseminated through the email listservs of national organizations.
